Overview
The Standard Horizon GX1850 is built for boaters who operate vessels with an integrated network (NMEA 2000)
and want flexible connectivity across onboard electronics. It supports Class D DSC and includes dedicated DSC
monitoring on Channel 70, but requires an external GPS feed for position-enabled DSC functions.
DSC Safety Calling (External GPS Required)
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) gives you one-touch distress calling and direct digital vessel-to-vessel calling.
To enable DSC position reporting and position-enabled features:
- A valid MMSI number must be programmed into the radio
- An external GPS must be connected (via NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183) to provide position and time
- DSC test calling lets you confirm proper setup before departure
NMEA 2000 Integration (Preferred)
The GX1850 supports NMEA 2000 for networked installations, allowing position, heading, and time to be shared from
existing GPS/heading sources without additional cabling. NMEA 2000 also simplifies powering and connecting
multiple devices on a backbone.
NMEA 0183 Support (Optional)
In addition to NMEA 2000, the GX1850 includes NMEA 0183 input/output for legacy chartplotters, GPS devices,
and redundancy. This offers flexibility for mixed installations or redundancy paths.
Second Station + Intercom (Optional)
Second-station capability adds an optional wired remote microphone (RAM4 / SSM-70H) and supports an intercom
feature between the main unit and the second station.

FAQ
Does the GX1850 include built-in GPS?
No. The GX1850 requires an external GPS source for position and time in order to support DSC position reporting.
Can I use DSC without GPS?
You can still make and receive DSC calls, but position-enabled features (distress with position, group monitor with position) require a GPS data feed from NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183.
Do I need an MMSI number?
Yes. A valid MMSI must be programmed to use DSC distress calling and DSC vessel-to-vessel calling.
Can the GX1850 connect to my network?
Yes. The GX1850 supports both NMEA 2000 for modern networked installations and NMEA 0183 for legacy or redundancy connections.
