Q: Does this item pass AIS, GPS AND DSC sentences back and forth? Does it need to be configured specifically for AIS? How is that done?

Asked by: Chris - 12/20/2016
A: This device does support GPS, AIS and DSC and by default will do all sentence to PGN translation. The supported PGNs can be found in the product manual here: https://www.milltechmarine.com/customer_center/NK-80_Manual_V1.10.pdf
No additional configuration is required other than changing the baud rate if necessary or filtering out unwanted sentences or PGNs.

Q: I want to use this adaptor to transmit DSC position information from my Standard Horizon GX2200 to the Sea Talk NG system (and ultimately to a Raymarine Axiom chartplotter). Three questions: 1. The Standard Horizon GX2200 manual indicates it transmits two DSC NMEA0183 sentences, DSC and DSE. However, the Adaptor manual only lists DSC and not DSE as supported NMEA 0183 sentences. Will I be able to show DSC position reports on my Axiom if the Adaptor is only passing through DSC and not DSE to the SeaTalk NG system? 2. What baud rate settings do I need for both the GX2200 and the NK-Adaptor in order to communicate with the SeaTalk NG system? And what is the default for the NK-80 Adaptor? Thanks.

Asked by: Clay - 3/31/2018
A: The NK-80 will send and translate DSC sentences but does not support DSE sentences. Check to see if your chart plotter requires DSE. We have full instructions on using the NK-80 and the GX2200 here: https://www.milltechmarine.com/Adding-NMEA-2000-support-to-a-Standard-Horizon-GX2200_b_24.html. If you use the NK-80 with SeaTalkNG, then you will need a female version of the Raymarine Devicenet cable found here: https://www.milltechmarine.com/Raymarine-NMEA-2000-to-SeaTalkNG-DeviceNet-Adaptor-Cable_p_305.html.
We ship the NK-80 preprogrammed to 38400 baud.

Q: Thinking of buying new Simrad go7 chartplotter. Can I connect my Raymarine ST4000 autopilot and Simrad echo transducer, both Nmea 0183, using one NK-80 adapter? Thanks

Asked by: Edmund - 6/17/2016
A: You'll need a separate NK-80 for each inbound device. Another option is to use the NMEA 0183 interface on the go7 for one of the inbound devices.

Q: I have a B&G Hydra2000 system with a Zeus12 display that is working fine - I'm not ready to toss it. Can I connect a set of three Garmin GNX120's (using NMEA2000) to the B&G system using this adapter? I also have a NMEA0183 Multiplexer.

Asked by: Al - 8/24/2016
A: Yes, this adapter can be connected to either the NMEA multiplexer or directly to the NMEA 0183 port on the B&G display.

Q: Can you tell me how I can configure my NK-80 interface with my PC ? I connect it with a Keyspan RS232/USB adapter, DB9-2 on red wire, DB9-3 on black wire and DB9-5 on Blue and green wire. Connect with 4800 bauds and nothing appear in the NK-80 utility ?? Regards

Asked by: Yann - 11/2/2016
A: Try the auto connect option in case the unit has a different baud rate that the 4800 baud shown in the manual.
If that does not work, try swapping the DB9-2 on red wire, DB9-3 on black wire to DB9-2 on black wire, DB9-3 on red wire. Then try the auto connect again. Some serial adapters have pins 2 and 3 reversed.

Q: There is a list of nmea0183 on P.22 of the manual, which doesn't include HDT nor HDG while screenshot on P.15 indicates both. Can this convert 127250 into HDT and HDG?

Asked by: z - 3/31/2017
A: I'm not sure why this was omitted from the manual, but yes heading sentences / PGNs are supported.

Q: Can I use this adapter to connect my Standard Horizon GX1600 VHF radio to my NMEA backbone so it can receive GPS data from the Raymarine GPS that is on my NMEA backbone? If so, are there any additional adapters I need? The backbone is in the same cabinet as the VHF, so not a long run. Thanks for your time to respond.

Asked by: Richard Stuart - 8/27/2017
A: Yes, the AMEC NMEA 2000 Adapter can be used for this scenario. Do you have a NMEA 2000 network or SeaTalkNG? If NMEA 2000, then just a NMEA 2000 T connector (http://www.milltechmarine.com/Garmin-NMEA-2000-T-Connector_p_274.html) would be required. If you have SeaTalkNG, then you would need a male Raymarine NMEA 2000 to SeaTalkNG DeviceNet Adaptor Cable (http://www.milltechmarine.com/Raymarine-NMEA-2000-to-SeaTalkNG-DeviceNet-Adaptor-Cable_p_305.html) and a SeaTalkNG T connector (http://www.milltechmarine.com/Raymarine-SeaTalkNG-T-Piece-Connector_p_329.html).
You would also need the have the NK80 programmed to use 4800 baud.

Q: Can the NK-80 be programmed to ignore GGA & RMC when converting from 0183 to 2000 but still allow GGA & RMC to be created from GNSS when converting from 2000 to 0183?

Asked by: Rick Vicik - 11/2/2017
A: Yes, the NK-80 can be programmed to filter any sentences or PGNs in both directions via the PC-based configuration app.

Q: What is the correct cabling for the NK80 to connect to a serial cable to a computer for advanced configuration?. I have 3 wires (Tx,Rx, Ground) coming from the computer cable and of course the 4 wires plus shield from the NK80.

Asked by: Bob - 12/26/2017
A: Please see the wiring information at the bottom of the product page. We describe wiring for a serial cable as well as our RS422 USB Breakout cable.

Q: Would like to convert 127250 to HDT and HDG but what I'm seeing through configuration tool is something like this; $HEHDT,157.9,T25 and $HCHDG,,,,,7.2, E:02. With HDT value and magnatic variation, should I get mag heading too? I cannot really see whether 127250 is sending value under magnetic or true heading... How can I resolve the issue?

Asked by: z - 5/14/2018
A: From what I can see 127250 can send heading as either true or magnetic. 127250 gets translated to HDT, which only shows true. The NK-80 does not appear to translate as well to HDM.

Q: I have hooked up my Simrad GO XSE 7 to my Standard Horizon GX 2200 as discribed in the article. I set the baud rate as described. The unit does not show any lights and the chartplotter does not show the AIS as a device on the network. I've checked the wiring. What is my next step in troubleshooting?

Asked by: John G - 8/29/2018
A: If there are no LEDs lighting up on the NK80 then it is most likely not getting power from the NMEA 2000 network. Make sure your network has power.

Q: Can I use this device to connect a 30 to 240 ohm fuel level sensor to a nmea 2000 network? Thank you

Asked by: Domingo - 10/4/2018
A: No this device would not work for that purpose. This converts NMEA 0183 sentences sent as serial digital data into NMEA 2000 PGN data and vice versa.
For a fuel sensor you would need some other type of analog to digital convertor or swap out the fuel sensor for a NMEA 2000 fuel sensor such as the one here: https://www.milltechmarine.com/Maretron-TLM100150-Tank-Monitor_p_327.html
