NMEA 2000® to NMEA 0183 Gateway Adaptor

The AMEC NK-80 NMEA 2000® Adaptor provides a full featured gateway between NMEA 0183 devices and NMEA 2000 networks. Likewise, a NMEA 2000 device can now be used by a marine instrument that only supports NMEA 0183.

AMEC Logo This device allows two-way communication between NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000. For example, you could connect a CAMINO-101 Class B transponder to your NMEA 2000 network. Or you could connect a standard NMEA or serial AIS receiver to a NMEA 2000 network. Or you could gateway all your NMEA 2000 traffic to a NMEA 0183 chartplotter. Or you could connect to a NMEA 2000 network using a computer serial port.

KEY FEATURES

High-Performance 32-bit RISC CPU
Want to connect the GX2200 AIS/GPS Matrix radio to a NMEA 2000 network?
Check out this blog article with step-by-step instructions on how to use the AMEC NK-80 NMEA 2000 Adaptor to add this capability.
The CPU has a performance of 80 DMIPS to manage high traffic loading of NMEA data transactions.
Build-in memory storage
Features 64KB RAM and 256KB Flash ROM to ensure no loss of data.
Galvanically isolated
Protect your circuitry and investment from electrical spikes.
Configurable through a serial connection
This allows users to monitor/control NMEA data transactions. The product includes a Windows-based configuration tool to allow setting the NMEA port baud rate, map which sentences are passed between the networks and other settings.
NMEA 2000 Certified
Provides maximum compatibility. The NK-80 passes all NMEA 2000 PGNs and NMEA 0183 sentences.
Powered by the NMEA2000 network
The NK-80 draws its power from the NMEA 2000 network so no additional power wiring is required.
Simple installation
Simply connect the NK-80 to your existing NMEA 2000 network and connect the NMEA 0183 input/output wires to your NMEA device. LEDs confirm data communication on both the NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 ports.

NOTE

The NK-80 ships with the NMEA 0183 side programmed to use 38400 baud by default. You can change the baud rate using the AMEC NK-80 Configuration program (link is below) which runs on a Windows PC. To connect the NK-80 NMEA 0183 wires to a PC, connect the RED wire to pin 2 of a nine pin serial cable, the BLUE and GREEN wires to the pin 5 ground wire and the BLACK wire to pin 3. We sell a serial breakout cable along with a DB9 female to female adapter which is useful for making this connection. Our USB Breakout Cable is another option for connecting to the NK80. If you use the RS422 model of the this cable, then use the following connections:
 AMEC NK-80   RS422 USB Cable
 RED (TX+) WHITE (RX-)
 GREEN (TX-) YELLOW (RX+)
 BLACK (RX+)   RED (TX-)
 BLUE (RX-) ORANGE (TX+)
Note the polarity swap for each wire pair.

I had been very happy with my AMEC AIS transponder for 5 years but wanted to upgrade my display to Furuno TZTOUCH which only accepts NMEA 2000. Set up a small backbone, plugged in the converter and had instant AIS display. Works great, no programming or issues at all.

Although I had an initial issue with the wrong NMEA 0183 baud being programmed in the NK-80, I was quickly able to resolve that with help from Milltech support. This adapter works perfectly to interface my Standard Horizon GX2200 to my Raymarine a78 for both AIS data and a secondary GPS.

Great solution to a nagging problem! Used to connect my Standard Horizon 2200 VHF/AIS radio to my NMEA2000 network. Have 2 plotters on the network. Now both plotters can see AIS targets! Although the unit ships pre-set to 38400, mine, for some reason was set at 4800. After returning to Milltech for diagnosis, and reinstalling, worked like a charm. Nice, simple, clean, elegant solution! Worked fast! AIS targets showed up on the plotter even before the charts were able to render on power up of the plotter! Great product and great support!

The NK-80 works perfect. I installed a new Raymarine " Evolution" autopilot (NMEA2000) on my Cape Dory last month and wanted to interface my Garmin 276 (NMEA0183)to the new autopilot. I did have to change the baud rate on the NK-80 to match the baud rate on the "older" Garmin to 4800. Easy enough to do..you may need to buy a RS-232 to usb adapter if your newer pc does not have RS-232 port.
