AIS Programming Required Prior to Shipment

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations require all Class B AIS transponders shipped to U.S. addresses to be programmed with a valid MMSI number and vessel details prior to shipment.

The product and support is exceptional. The B923 works exactly as expected and I contacted support multiple times as the installation was tricky on my 20 year old Raymarine C-80. The C-80 MFD required a system upgrade from 3.19 to 5.69 before the B923 would respond. Further, the green and white C-80 wires were connected directly to the B923, bypassing my Garmin GPS which only transmits at 4800 baud. The baud setting on the C-80 was set to AIS 36,400, the AIS layer setting was set to on, the B923 responded and the C-80 displayed AIS targets.

Q: I am considering an em-trac B923 class B AIS unit for my boat. I wish to display the information on my B&G Vulcan V7 which is on a NMEA 2000 backbone. Will this work without the NMEA 0183 connection wire which is shown in the installation diagram? In other words if the em-trak is connected to the NMEA 2000 will everything work?

A: Yes, the NMEA 0183 connection is not required. The B923 can output either NMEA 0183 or NMEA2000 independently or simultaneously. So in your case you would simply need power and NMEA2000.

A: Yes, The B923 (as well as any em-trak B900 series) will integrate seamlessly with the B&G Zeus 3 through NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183.

Q: I currently have a Standard Horizon VHF with AIS receive only. I don't know if there is a splitter in this VHF unit. If I install the em-trak B923 with its internal splitter can I just make the antenna cable connection between the VHF and the em-trak without any problems?

A: There is not a splitter built in the Standard Horizon VHF, you will be fine. You would take the antenna cable out of the VHF, go into the B923 and out from the B923 into the VHF.

Q: Is this unit good for replacing a Garmin ais 300? Or what might you suggest?

A: Yes, the em-trak B923 would have very similar functionality to the Garmin AIS300. Both have an integrated splitter but of course the B923 is a 2 watt transceiver/transponder so it sends and receives AIS messages. If you prefer a more powerful model then the B953 has 5 watt transmit power using SOTDMA technology.

Q: What cables does this AIS come with? I assume I need power, antenna to MFD and NMEA to MFD.

A: Here is everything that comes with the B923:
1 x AIS Transceiver
1 x Power and Data Cable (2m)
1 x FLEXI-FIT Mounting Bracket – Complete with Screws & Optional Fixing Tape
1 x VHF radio antenna cable (1m)

You can take a look at the Installation/User manual under the Downloads tab and on page 14 there is a installation configuration diagram that may be useful. Basically, Power, VHF antenna in, Splitter out to VHF (1m cable supplied), and then NMEA 0183 to MFD or NMEA 2000 to the backbone.

A: To properly display AIS data from the Em-Trak B923, the chartplotter must be connected via NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000. Even if a device supports Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, those connections are typically used for other purposes, such as app integration or data streaming, but not for critical functions like AIS data exchange. Therefore, the Em-Trak B923 must be integrated into the vessel’s NMEA network to ensure accurate and reliable data display on the chartplotter.
