Furuno FA170 Class A AIS Transponder with 4.3" Color Display
The Furuno FA170 (FA-170) is a professional Class A AIS transponder designed for commercial vessels, workboats, fishing vessels, and other applications requiring a fully compliant Class A AIS installation. Its clear 4.3" color LCD display provides an easy-to-read view of nearby AIS-equipped vessels, base stations, AIS Aids to Navigation (AtoN), AIS-SARTs, and other AIS targets within VHF range.
In addition to its standalone AIS display, the FA170 is designed for integration with a vessel's bridge electronics. AIS target and navigation data can be distributed to compatible ECDIS, radar, charting, and other navigation systems, while the integrated LAN interface provides an efficient option for network-based bridge installations. The FA170 includes 6 input/output ports, 3 input-only ports, one LAN port, and an alarm output, providing ample connectivity for larger commercial installations.
The FA170 can store up to 2,048 AIS targets and AIS-SARTs. Operators can select individual targets to view detailed information including vessel name or MMSI, heading, speed over ground (SOG), course over ground (COG), and other transmitted AIS data. A dedicated Dangerous Target List provides quick access to vessels identified as potential collision risks.
The FA170 is also BAM (Bridge Alert Management) ready and meets the requirements for alert handling and interconnection specified in IMO MSC.302(87). Current versions are also compliant with IACS UR E27 requirements for cyber resilience of onboard systems.

Bridge and Navigation System Integration
The Furuno FA170 is particularly well suited for vessels requiring AIS data to be shared among multiple bridge systems. With multiple serial interfaces plus Ethernet/LAN connectivity, the FA170 can provide AIS information to compatible ECDIS, radar, and other navigation equipment while continuing to operate as a dedicated Class A AIS display and transponder.
AIS Target and Safety Information
The FA170 provides both graphical and list-based views of AIS traffic. Selecting a target brings up detailed vessel information, while dangerous targets are automatically organized into a separate list for quick review. The unit also supports AIS safety-related messaging and reception of AIS search-and-rescue targets to assist with situational awareness during normal navigation and emergency operations.
Optional Pilot Plug: A Furuno FA-1703 Pilot Plug is available separately for installations requiring a dedicated pilot connection.
