The SR161 is an entry-level, low-cost, single-channel scanning receiver. It is designed for recreational vessels using a computer with AIS-capable navigation software or RS232 compatible chartplotters, such as the Standard Horizon CP180 and CP300.

For a very simple, low-cost and easy-to-set-up PC-based AIS system, use the SR161, with the Sabrent USB to Serial Adapter.

CautionThe SR161 can provide years of service when used with a computer's standard RS232 serial port interface, an AISWatchmate or a compatible chartplotter. It is not designed to be used with chart plotters employing a NMEA standard (RS422) interface (such as Raymarine C,  E and G Series or Garmin 4000 and 5000 series).  If you need an AIS solution for use with a chart plotter, please consider one of our NMEA-compatible AIS receivers  or any of our AIS transponders

Key Features
  • Single channel receiver that scans between the two AIS frequencies
  • When interference is detected on one receiving channel, the SR161 automatically switches to the alternate AIS channel
  • High-sensitivity AIS data reception
  • Line of sight reception similar to marine VHF reception distances
  • Very low power consumption
  • Receives AIS Class A and Class B vessel reports
  • Sends information to a PC via a serial interface
  • Ability to track and display information on multiple targets
  • Easy installation: connect a VHF antenna (not included), 12 volt DC power and a serial cable to your PC
  • Can be used with your existing VHF marine radio antenna with an appropriate splitter
  • Can be used to consolidate incoming NMEA positional data from a GPS into a combined high-speed data stream on a single serial port.
    Software Support

The SR161 can be used with many popular computer-based marine navigation packages. The following Windows®-based packages have been tested and are known to work with these receivers:

    Exactly as described
I bought one of these about 5 years ago and it is still functioning as new. I bought a new one recently to have as a spare - I don't expect to have to use it, but if I need it I have it. I have the original connected to my MFD and my Garmin chartplotter, and wired to connect to my laptop and Vesper Marine display unit. Works perfectly.

    Excellent gadget
Have just installed and started using our SR 161 AIS Receiver. It was easy to install and setup. We have connected it to an ASUS Eeebox which runs all our charting using OpenCPN software. The three make a great navigation combination.

Purchased the SR161 receiver and associated VHF antennea sharing unit. An inexpensive and effective way to introduce AIS into your navigation system. Easy install and worked first time - for the price, a best buy!
