The Adapter is ideal for use with the Smart Radio AIS Receiver product family as well as our AIS transponders with serial ports. This product is based on the rock-solid FTDI chipset, has been tested and found to work very reliably. Not to be confused with Sabrent's non-FTDI-chipset adapters.

Perfect for connecting AIS devices to computers, notebooks, and hand held computing devices that support USB. The USB Serial Adapter delivers AIS data at over 1 Mbps.

Works Perfectly
I bought this to replace some Profilic-based Serial-to-USB adapter cables because they would routinely disappear from the computer when connected. This has worked without issue so far and worked immediately upon plugging it in.

I couldn't be happier with this product. We used it with our Garmin handheld GPS before we installed our new ICOM AIS. It works as advertised. It also appears to have resolved the issues I had with a Prolific based GPS device.

This product is inexpensive and reliable. We experienced issues with a similar Profilic-based Serial-to-USB adapter cable (our app would lose connection with the virtual COM port, and the port would then be unavailable until a reboot!); switching to this cable resolved this. In our testing, we found that the drivers (from 2/2009?) that ship with this cable (as of 6/2010) bluescreened our systems. FTDI has an updated driver (from 10/2009?) that resolves this problem.
