Each vessel equipped with an AIS transponder (Class A or Class B) sends out a packet of data every few seconds with information about the ship and its voyage. AIS receivers pick up these radio signals and translate them into NMEA data sentences. The sentences are read by computers with the proper software, dedicated displays such as the Vesper AISWatchMate, or AIS-enabled chartplotters. Receivers with an RS422 NMEA 0183 interface allow easy and compatible connection to NMEA standard chart plotters from Raymarine, Garmin, Northstar, Lowrance, Simrad and others.
